Online & Classroom Short Courses (CPD)
Each course below can be taken standalone, or complete all six to earn the full Fire Safety Officer qualification.
The courses emphasize class attendance, practical and written exercises, assessments, and evaluations. All written and practical assessments follow current standards. Written Assessments are closed-book and include multiple-choice, true/false, and short-answer questions. Practical Assessments occur at various site locations, with evaluations submitted after completing all course modules. Assessments draw from course material and embedded knowledge based on the learner’s experience level. To be deemed competent, learners must score at least 50% on the written assessment and 60% on the practical scenario evaluation. Re-assessments are available for select courses.
Fire services worldwide often deploy inspectors and plan examiners without specialized qualifications, leading to inconsistent competency standards. The IFE Certified Fire Safety Officer Development Programme addresses this gap by equipping learners with essential knowledge and skills for the role. Benchmarked against NFPA 1031 Job Performance Requirements, it also incorporates South African legislation and job specifications.
The programme includes six short courses plus an approved practical on-the-job portfolio of evidence.
Competence is required for all modules of the Programme.
- Module 1: Fire Safety Management Course broken into 2 parts:
- Part 1: Fire Safety Legislation Course
- Part 2: Fire Risk Assessment Course

- Module 4: Fundamentals of Design and Evaluation of Engineered Solutions Course
